'Project Runway' At NHS
âProject Runwayâ At NHS

On the afternoon of December 7, members of Peer Leadership sponsored Newtown High Schoolâs own version of Project Runway with 20 design teams competing for scholarship money.
Project Runway is a reality television show on Bravo that brings together 15 up-and-coming fashion designers who compete for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show in the world-renowned Bryant Park tents during New Yorkâs Fashion Week.
Student design teams consisted of one or two designers and a model. Some designers modeled their own creations. The teams could spend no more than $75 on the dress; accessories were not included in that amount. All construction was completed by the design teams.
NHS Project Runway took place after school in the lobby with designers presenting their creations. After the 20 models strutted on the runway, judges deliberated to determine a winner. The quality of the designs was so good, the judges had to review the top three outfits a second time to determine the winning entry.
Ultimately, the judges had to make a decision. The first place prize, a $300 scholarship, was awarded to Erica Woloszynski for her formal evening wear, which she modeled. Second place, a $150 scholarship, was presented to Alyssa Krueger. Jennie Samson was Alyssaâs model.
Both young ladies are considering studying fashion design in college, but admit it is a very competitive business.
Erica said she has designed clothing before, but never sewn anything. Alyssa, on the other hand, has sewn numerous items, but never designed. Both girls said the competition was a lot of fun.
