Grateful To Community
To The Editor:
The Caroline Previdi Toy Chest, which is planned and organized by the Newtown Knights of Columbus Council 185, took place on December 14 and once again demonstrated the extraordinary compassion and generosity of our community. Hosted each year at the St Rose of Lima campus, the Toy Chest has long provided hope and dignity to families in need throughout Newtown and the surrounding area.
This year, the drive served more than 180 families and 570 children. Held on the solemn anniversary of the Sandy Hook tragedy, the event stood as a quiet but powerful reminder that love grows when it is shared, and that even in remembrance, our community continues to choose generosity, service, and hope. The incredible growth of this event is reflective of the feeling and emotions that all of our parishioners, businesses, and organizations have toward supporting all victims of that very sad day on December 14, 2012, and is now our way to give to so many children in need.
Shortly after the Sandy Hook tragedy, the toy drive was named in honor of Caroline Previdi. Caroline was known for regularly brining her own allowance to church to help those in need — an enduring example of selflessness that continues to inspire this effort year after year.
Since November, more than 2,000 toys were collected through the kindness of countless anonymous donors and the support of many organizations, including St Rose of Lima Parish, school, religious education, and Walking with Purpose Women’s Group, Marines Toys for Tots, Wesley Learning Center, the New Fairfield Fire Department, Benchmark Assisted Living, Arch Medical Solutions, Newtown Savings Bank, and the Newtown Police Department.
The Caroline Previdi Toy Chest remains a testament to what is possible when a community comes together in the spirit of generosity and love. This event is truly the gift that keeps on giving.
