Snapshot: Dan Honan
Occupation: I’m the proprietor of the Honan Funeral Home, on Main Street, a family business since 1903.
Family: I’ve been married to Colleen for 32 years. We have two kids. Patrick is 27, and lives here in Newtown. Eileen is 30 now, and lives outside of Pittsburgh with her husband, Arlen. My mom, Jeanne, still lives next door. Colleen and I come from big families. We each had eight kids in our families.
Pets: We own Pumpkin, our cat. He was my daughter’s when she was a junior in high school. She wanted a kitten and we said if she made honor roll, she could get one. She made high honors. We’ve had Pumpkin for about 14 years now.
How long have you lived in Newtown? All my life. My family goes back four generations here.
What do you like to do in your free time? I’ve been in the Rotary Club since 1988, and I’ve just been elected to a third term on the Legislative Council. I’m a lifelong member of St Rose and assistant sexton at the St Rose Cemetery. I love to watch old movies, and we like to travel.
Do you have a favorite classic movie? The Asphalt Jungle, a film noir from around 1950. It’s about a jewel heist, and Marilyn Monroe is in it, one of her first movies. A more recent movie, one of my favorties that I’ve watched several times, is The Shawshank Redemption.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? We have a time share in Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, on the north coast. We try to get there a couple times a year. It’s a great place to do nothing!
What is the best thing about Newtown? I would say the diversity of people. I see people from all walks of life.
What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in town? It has to be the traffic. As a kid, we could ride bikes across Main Street a hundred times a day, and you certainly can’t do that anymore. One thing I don’t like is that you can’t buy a new car in town anymore, or a suit of clothes. Retail has really changed.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life? Probably my parents, Bill and Jeanne. My father instilled in me that if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right. My mother gave me that everybody’s opinion is worthy of consideration. You need to listen to everybody. That’s been a help on the Legislative Council, where we have people from all over. I’m glad we have two considerably younger people on the Legislative Council this year, too.
Do you have a guilty pleasure? If a food is bad for you, I like it. Foot-long hot dogs are probably my weakness.
