If you were born on Christmas Day in 1977, maybe your first vision was of the full moon. That’s the last time you would have celebrated your birthday with a full moon — until this Friday, when the moon will once more cast its greatest light of the month on December 25. And consider this: if you were born after December 25, 1977, this weekend will be your first Christmas Day full moon.

The Bee received a nice card and note last week from a former longtime Newtown resident, Dorothy Cavanaugh, a member of the historic Newtown Cavanaugh family. Dorothy says that a few health setbacks this past year brought her to the realization that she was in need of care from a long-term care facility. She is currently residing at Bedford Hills Center, in Bedford, N.H., near her daughter, Susan. “It also allows me to see my great-grandson. Family comes to visit often,” writes Dorothy. Bee staff who remember the days when the printing was done downstairs at 5 Church Hill office recall that Dorothy and several of her friends came weekly to The Bee, once upon a time, to help collate the paper for distribution. “I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,” was Dorothy’s wish to us, and we send good wishes right back to her.

After the hectic holiday celebrations, it might be nice to take a little break. I think I have just the thing: The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will be presenting it next exhibition at Bottle Stop Wine & Spirit Superstore, beginning this weekend. From December 26 until January 9, a collection of whimsical paintings by the local artist Lynne Welsh will be exhibited. The public is invited to visit the store, and view the show, Mondays through Saturdays, between 9 am and 9 pm; and Sundays, between 10 am and 5 pm.

The “Ethereal Newtown” exhibit by artist Virginia Zimmerman is still on display at Newtown Municipal Center at Fairfield Hills, too. Through December 31, you can view her works during building hours, 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. A multistep process is used to create these beautiful renditions of familiar landscapes and buildings.

The other ongoing event is Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company’s synchronized light show, at 34 Hawleyville Road, through January 8. From 5 to 11 pm each night, stop by to enjoy a mesmerizing song and light show. It might be just the thing to get you in the spirit of the season.

Certainly, the weather is not contributing to that spirit. It’s a little hard to sing “Walking In A Winter Wonderland” when the grass is as green as it was last summer. I hope Santa has some tires to put on his sleigh, rather than sled runners, for his Christmas Eve excursion.

Of course, if you need some action in your life, Newtown High School’s hockey team will host its next Skate With The Nighthawks event, open to all Newtown children who play ice hockey, Sunday, December 27. The free hockey session will take place at Danbury Ice Arena, 1 Independence Way, from 10 to 11:40 am. Check-in will open at 8:45 am, in the lobby. The event will include a series of skills, games, and practice drills conducted by the high school coaching staff and players. There will not be any checking/contact during the event. Players are encouraged to wear their organization’s game jerseys, and must wear all equipment. Register online at http://bit.ly/1RCJi5k.

My Christmas wish has come true. Jojo, the last of three kittens born with a congenital defect causing stunted front legs, and in the care of The Animal Center, was adopted this week. Jojo’s siblings, Dominic and Skye, were adopted earlier this month. Jojo has a few other health concerns, so it has taken a while longer for the right family to come along. Here’s wishing Jojo many happy years in the arms of a loving forever family.

A memorial butterfly garden will be established at the municipal center at Fairfield Hills in memory of Tammy Hazen, who worked at the Land Use office for many years. Tammy recently passed away. To support this project, donations in the form of checks made out to “Town of Newtown,” with “Tammy’s Garden” on the memo line, can be mailed to Bob Tait, Finance Director, Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Lane, Newtown CT 06470. Donations will go directly to a fund to be used only for this project.

Just a reminder that if there is a youngster in the family celebrating a birthday, be sure to send in a photo to The Bee Birthday Cake. Not only does the photo appear in the paper, one Birthday Cake kid each week wins a delicious cake from DOrazio Sisters Bakery in Plaza South. Send a photo, birth date, and age, along with a daytime phone number to nancy@thebee.com. Details are found in the “Just For Kids” column, in the education section of the paper.

Santa and I have made a pact: he’ll make everyone’s Christmas merry, and I will see that his reindeer make it into my column. So, on Dasher, and Dancer, and Prancer, and Vixen! On Comet, and Cupid, and Donner, and Blitzen — and of course, lead the way, Rudolph! Now, be sure to have a Merry Christmas, but don’t forget next week to… Read me again.

Good news from The Animal Center: Jojo, a very special kitten, has been adopted. Both of her sisters were recently adopted out as well.
