Boys’ Swim Team Wins Opening Meet
Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming team got the season off to a nice start with a 96-69 win over visiting Joel Barlow-Bethel on December 19. The Nighthawks logged first place in all but one race, sealed the team win with a pair of events to go, and exhibitioned the final two races.
The 200 yard medley relay team comprising Alex Gadbut, Finn Clancy, Kyle Albrecht, and Elias Kolb was first in 1:48.49. The relay of Beau Clancy, Sam Irving, Bradley George, and Warren Ache came in third in 1:53.67.
Gadbut won the 200 free in 1:56.16; Connor Kelly took third in 2:13.41. In the 200 individual medley Albrecht was first in 2:18.20; Beau Clancy was third in 2:37.29. Ache won the 50 free in 23.53; Kolb was third in 24.77.
In the 100 butterfly, Albrecht was second in 58.98 and George third in 1:03.52. Ache won the 100 free in 53.40, edging teammate and runner-up event finisher Finn Clancy, with a time of 53.51. NHS went one-two-three in the 500 with Gadbut making his final touch in 5:12.45, Irving finishing in 6:01.55, and Jack Pettit making his final touch in 6:47.21.
In the 200 free relay Ache, Trenton Story, Kelly, and Finn Clancy won in a time of 1:41.37, edging Barlow-Bethel in a race as close as it gets with the visitors clocking in at 1:41.38. Newtown’s Ryan Lombard, Brady Wennerholm, Jeremiah Stone, and George came in third in 1:54.28.
Kolb won the 100 backstroke race in 1:04.33; Beau Clancy placed second in 1:05.11. Finn Clancy won the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.79 and Irving took second in 1:11.95.
In the 400 free relay Albrecht, Kolb, Irving, and Gadbut had the fastest swim in 3:50.27; Story, George, Beau Clancy, and Kelly were next-fastest in 4:17.97.
