Matthew Garbarino of Newtown has been offered admission to Colby College in Maine under Colby’s early decision program. He is scheduled to enroll in the fall, following his graduation from Newtown High School. He is the son of Carol and William Garbarino of Newtown. At NHS he has been a member of the football and lacrosse teams, the Guidance Honor Association and served as a volunteer. With his acceptance, Garbarino is one of the 129 students admitted for early-decision admission to Colby.

Jennifer Presnell, a sophomore interior design major at the Savannah College of Art and Design, was recently awarded the Marian Edna Effing Scholarship. This $10,000 portfolio-based scholarship is awarded to individuals whose work is deemed worthy as a result of a review by a committee of faculty members. Jennifer is currently on the Dean’s List, with a 3.66 GPA. The Savannah College of Art and Design is a private, internationally recognized bachelor and master degree granting institution. Ms Presnell, a former resident of Newtown and a 1997 Newtown High School graduate, is the daughter of James and Cindy Presnell, also previous residents of Newtown.

 Joseph Howard Blanchard

Joseph Howard Blanchard, son of Kirk and Judy Blanchard of Newtown, has recently received a nomination to the United States Naval Academy from Senator Joseph Lieberman and Congressman James Maloney. Joe, a senior honors student at Newtown High School, is a captain of both the Newtown High School cross country and swim teams, and serves as vice president to the Key Club.

The Forman School, 12 Norfolk Road, Litchfield, Connecticut will be holding an Open House on Friday, January 28, 2000, from 9 am to noon. The Open House will be held in Chase Library. The Forman School is a private, coeducational college preparatory school for students in ninth- through twelfth-grades who have been diagnosed as having specific learning differences or dyslexia. Spencer Ley, a former resident of Newtown and graduate of Henry Abbott Technical School in Danbury, received his bachelor’s degree magna cum laude in the field of social work from James Madison University. He currently resides in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Shannon Doherty, Todd Palmer, Heather Ratcliff, Adela Todd and Jonathan Pond all graduated from Western Connecticut State University this December. Ms Doherty, of Newtown, graduated with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education and history. Mr Palmer, of Newtown, graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in computer science. Ms Ratcliff, of Newtown, graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology, with a minor in journalism. Ms Todd, of Newtown, graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish. Mr Pond, of Sandy Hook, graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in communications and theatre arts-media.
