Pysanka Workshop
Pysanka Workshop
The Ukrainian Cultural Organization of Greater Danbury will present a demonstration on how to make Easter eggs and paska on Sunday, April 16, from 2 to 5 pm. The demonstration and a workshop will be held at the home of Olga Paproski, at 5 Hattertown Road in Newtown.
Mrs Paproski will discuss the beauty of the Ukrainian Easter egg, called Pysanka. She will talk about its history, traditions and symbols. A brief explanation will be given concerning how the lavishly decorated eggs came to be such a tradition, including a history of Ukrainian baskets filled with the eggs being taken to church on Easter Sunday for blessing.
Participants will then make their own pysanka in the wax-resist method, utilizing the kistka, beeswax and dyes.
The workshop fee is $5 per person, which includes some materials. Each participant is asked to bring two white whole eggs (raw and unblemished, at room temperature), a soft lead pencil, two short candles in candleholders, and a small towel.
Reservations are requested. For a seating or additional information, call Mrs Paproski at 426-4017, Frances Ruppell at 748-5521, or Gloria Horbaty at 269-5909.
