Glorydays - August 9, 1996

This week in 1991

Several local athletes competed at the Third Annual Connecticut State Nutmeg

Games and a handful returned home with gold medals for their efforts. Tracey

Willis (field hockey), Nicole Kelchner (swimming), Diane Lijek (swimming),

Susan White (swimming), Sean McVey (football), Karen Corkum (volleyball),

Chris Hayward (baseball), and Bob Zito (football coach) all captured gold

medals in their respective sports.

This week in 1986

Newtown's Susan White, competing in the girls' 10-and-under division, placed

seventh in the 50 butterfly and ninth in the 100 fly at the McDonald's

Connecticut Junior Olympics Swim Meet held in Canton, Ct. White's FAST

(Fairfield Area Swim Team) teammates Amy Foster and Lindsey Cassel each

advanced to the finals as well (both in the 11/12 division) with Foster

placing seventh in the 50 fly and eighth in the 400 free, and Cassel taking

eleventh in the 400 free. Other FAST swimmers to compete included Veronica

Leddy, Lori Foster, Tony Panigutti, Jeanette Tetrault, Renee Malanga, and

Elizabeth Chiappetta.

This week in 1981

The Newtown Nuggets won three consecutive games in the loser's bracket to

claim the ASA 13-15 New England Regional Fastpitch Softball Tournament in

Wilbraham, Mass. Newtown was forced to defeat defending New England champion,

Somerset, Mass, in order to win the title and did so by scores of 10-6 and

5-2. Angela Tucci pitched a two-hitter in the finals as Becky Sherwood lashed

out two hits and Kim DeCarlo and Amy Lopez-Cepero each scored two runs. The

remainder of the team, coached by Tony DeCarlo, included Cassie Garvin, Bonnie

Hertburg, Lisa Barney, Lori Wells, Sue Campbell, Ann Odoy, Heather Radcliffe,

Chris Ertl, Donna Springmeyer, Lori Zemo, and Trish O'Byrne. In becoming the

New England champions, the Nuggets qualified for the upcoming National

Tournament in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

This week in 1976

The Southbury American Legion baseball team, which included a handful of

Newtown ballplayers, swept three games this week to take possession of first

place in Zone 6 with a record of 11-2 in the zone, and 13-6-2 overall. The

team consisted of Gary Pepe, Allan Garray, Colin McLaughlin, Rich Scanlon,

Bill French, Marty Gunnoud, John Russell, John Wilson, Kirk and Keith Bennett,

Ed Hatfield, Harold Ekberg, Mike Pickert, Bill Slavinsky, Rick Chasse, Doug

Wilson, and Doug Seymour.

This week in 1971

Doug Palmer, trailing by four strokes at the start of the final round, shot a

round of 69, giving him a 36-hole gross of 143 lifting him ahead of Al Szalay

for the Newtown Country Club All-Senior Championship. Szalay shot 77 on the

final day to finish second with a 146, after entering the day with a

four-stroke advantage. Szalay did win the low-net honor, though.

This week in 1966

The Newtown Little League's All-Star team finished up its summer with a

humbling 12-0 loss against Seymour after defeating Naugatuck 3-2 only two days

earlier. In the victory over Naugatuck, Mike Kascak belted a home run and a

single and fanned 14 batters on the mound to propell Newtown to victory.

Against Seymour, though, Newtown moundsmen Matt McQuail, Mike Cavanaugh, and

John Proterra were all unable to stop the high-powered offense paced by

slugger Tom Curley who mashed a pair of homers and a single for Seymour.
