The Newtown Nuggets won three consecutive games in the loser's bracket to
claim the ASA 13-15 New England Regional Fastpitch Softball Tournament in
Wilbraham, Mass. Newtown was forced to defeat defending New England champion,
Somerset, Mass, in order to win the title and did so by scores of 10-6 and
5-2. Angela Tucci pitched a two-hitter in the finals as Becky Sherwood lashed
out two hits and Kim DeCarlo and Amy Lopez-Cepero each scored two runs. The
remainder of the team, coached by Tony DeCarlo, included Cassie Garvin, Bonnie
Hertburg, Lisa Barney, Lori Wells, Sue Campbell, Ann Odoy, Heather Radcliffe,
Chris Ertl, Donna Springmeyer, Lori Zemo, and Trish O'Byrne. In becoming the
New England champions, the Nuggets qualified for the upcoming National
Tournament in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

The Southbury American Legion baseball team, which included a handful of
Newtown ballplayers, swept three games this week to take possession of first

Doug Palmer, trailing by four strokes at the start of the final round, shot a
round of 69, giving him a 36-hole gross of 143 lifting him ahead of Al Szalay
for the Newtown Country Club All-Senior Championship. Szalay shot 77 on the
final day to finish second with a 146, after entering the day with a
four-stroke advantage. Szalay did win the low-net honor, though.

The Newtown Little League's All-Star team finished up its summer with a
humbling 12-0 loss against Seymour after defeating Naugatuck 3-2 only two days
earlier. In the victory over Naugatuck, Mike Kascak belted a home run and a
single and fanned 14 batters on the mound to propell Newtown to victory.
Against Seymour, though, Newtown moundsmen Matt McQuail, Mike Cavanaugh, and
John Proterra were all unable to stop the high-powered offense paced by
slugger Tom Curley who mashed a pair of homers and a single for Seymour.
