BILL ALLARD
Occupation: Retired from Curtis Packaging after 30 years in Shipping and
Receiving on the second shift, and Warehouse, and Clerk. Now I'm selling
papers for The Bee [part-time]. I was in the Navy for three years and 11
months - on a merchant convoy at first, then the regular Navy on the aircraft
carrier USS Boxer, CV21. I was a store keeper on there. Then I was discharged
and from there I went to Curtis.
Family: My son, Steven. He graduated from UConn.
Pets: Nope. I had a dog - passed away at 22 years of age; the second dog at 17
years of age.
How long in Newtown: Thirty-three years. When I came to Newtown I got the job
[at Curtis Packaging].
Biggest change in town: The growth of the town is about the only thing I can
say. The police department got larger because when I came here there was only
Hanlon and Shaw - the old-timers.
Hobbies: Modelling - railroad modelling and building other little things. I
made a football field with stands on the side, a baseball diamond with stands
on the side, and a hockey rink. Now I'm working on a soccer field. It's all
built, I just have to put the out-of-bounds lines and the goals. I have model
railroads N and H gauge, and layouts. I've even got a Howard Johnson's and a
swimming pool, a police station, and fire station. When I was young, back home
in Vermont, I used to play football, softball, baseball, and hockey. Those
were my hobbies then. I started modelling when I came here.
Favorite Baseball Team: The Mets - ha! No, I always was a Red Sox Fan.
Yastremski gave this [baseball cap] to me. Years ago, at a game. I shook his
hand.
Favorite food: T-bone steak, if I can get it.
Personal philosophy: One day at a time. I don't make no plans anymore.
Whatever comes, comes.
