NHS Basketball Champs Honored

Stone River Grille, in Sandy Hook, held a reception for the Class LL state champion Newtown High School girls’ basketball team on April 1. The event, which was open to the public, included free appetizers and a cake donated by Big Y. Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra recognized the team with a proclamation, and Stone River Griller Owner Gary Seri congratulated the players. The team was also honored the week before when My Place threw the girls a pizza party.

“The whole town is excited about them bringing home the trophy,” Seri said.

The Nighthawks captured the program’s first state title by defeating Mercy of Middletown, 44-42, on March 16.
