Remember when one of the greatest basketball players in the NBA decided to try his hand at baseball? Despite being one of the best athletes around he never made it out of the bush leagues. He batted about .202. No doubt, if he hadnât been Michael Jordan, nobody would have let him through the door.
Public service, like the game of baseball, appears to be very simple. Deceptively so. Even if you think youâll find it rewarding and you really want to try it, you donât know until you play for awhile whether or not youâll be able to pull your own weight, never mind be a franchise player.
His questionable record as a businessman aside, we have no evidence that Mr Sheluck can handle the responsibilities of the lower profile boards and commissions, much less the position of first selectman. His charter revision effort was a disaster, producing the strangest municipal government structure around. His contentious and confrontational style in public meetings is well-known. He needs to get some experience and prove he can handle the nitty-gritty of public service before we can seriously consider him for the top job.
