Color Guards Continue Successful Campaign
The three Newtown Winter Color Guards continue to succeed this season, keeping busy with competitions in SWC (Southwest Conference), MAC (Musical Arts Conference) and WGI (Winter Guard International) circuits.
The Newtown High School Varsity Winter Guard won two gold medals last Friday night as it was crowned both SWC Champions and New England Open Indoor Guard Champions in the Scholastic National A division at Bunnell High School.
Also at Bunnell, the Junior Varsity guard, made up of students from Newtown Middle School, earned the title of New England Open Indoor Guard Champions in the Middle School class. They took home the runner-up award in the SWC Junior Varsity Class.
On Saturday night, the Nighthawk Varsity Winter Guard won the Scholastic National A division in MAC competition at Norwalk High School. The Junior Varsity was awarded second place in the Scholastic AAA division, bettering their previous weekâs score by 8.6 points. The Newtown Junior Guard came in second place, finishing just a tenth of a point behind rival Bethel. The junior guard is comprised of fifth- and sixth-graders from Reed Intermediate School.
On February 28 and March 1, the Newtown Varsity Winter Guard competed in the two-day WGI Power Regional at Trumbull High School. The guard competed against 17 high school guards from the Eastern United States and advanced through the semifinal round on Saturday. The Nighthawks had a strong performance on Sunday and finished the regional competition in fourth place.
All three Newtown winter guards will compete this Saturday at Naugatuck High School in the MAC competition. The MAC Championships will be held on March 28 at Trumbull High School.Â
The NHS Varsity Winter Guard will travel to South Brunswick, New Jersey, the weekend of March 20 â 22, for another WGI Power Regional Competition.
