Gladiators Off To Fast Start With Six Wins

The Newtown Gladiators 9-year old baseball travel B team started off summer play with a 6-2-1 record and is currently on a four-game winning streak.

Newtown 17, New Fairfield 11 – Over the Fourth of July weekend, the team traveled to New Fairfield and New Canaan. In New Fairfield, under the lights, trailing by three runs in the top of the sixth inning with one on and two outs, the Gladiators rallied to tie the game at seven apiece on clutch hits by Matt Campbell (one RBI) and Spencer Johnson (two RBI). Colin Patrick pitched a scoreless sixth inning by striking out two batters, and Jack Riley threw out a runner at second to send the game into extra innings. In the top of the seventh inning, the Gladiator bats came alive and scored 10 runs off of three New Fairfield pitchers. Patrick had two hits in the inning, and Mitchell Savoca roped a two-RBI double. Defensively, Dylan Tyrrell ended the game with a great play at third to throw out the runner at first. Noah Laferriere and Savoca played well in the field, each having multiple putouts.

Newtown 13, New Canaan 8 – In New Canaan, clutch catches in the outfield by Daniel Pearson, Mitchell Savoca, and Colin Patrick stifled rallies by New Canaan to help lead the Gladiators to victory.  Jack Riley pitched well in relief by retiring the last five batters of the game. Dylan Tyrell and Robert Katrinak played solid defensively. Offensively, clutch hitting by Paul Whitaker with three RBI, Matt Campbell (double and two RBI) and Savoca (two doubles and four RBI), helped pace the offense.

Newtown 11, Redding 8 – Dylan Tyrrell, Mitchell Savoca, and Colin Patrick each collected two hits and a double to lead the Gladiators against Redding. On defense, the Gladiators turned a double play to end the game and Matt Kretz made a key putout. Tyrrell and Patrick struck out eight batters over four innings of work.

Newtown 13, Brookfield 8 – Mitchell Savoca reached base four times with three singles, and scored each time to lead the Gladiator offense. Dylan Tyrrell and Colin Patrick each collected two hits, including a double apiece, and scored twice to round out the hitting. Defensively, Nick Lametto made a nice diving catch while playing second base in the sixth inning, and Paul Whitaker, Tyrrell, and Savoca struck out 12 Brookfield batters over the six innings.
