Childrenâs Programs
Story Hour: Sign-up for the next series of story times begins March 21 and continues through March 30. Registration forms are available in the Childrenâs Department; no phone registrations will be accepted. The toddler program is for two-year-olds and their caregivers. They meet Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings from 10:00-10:30. Children must be two by April 1 to be eligible for this session. Pre-school story times for 3-5 year-olds take place Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoon from 1-1:45 pm. An additional session will be offered on Thursday morning from 11-11:45. Adult Programs
Tax season is here and if youâd like some free assistance stop by the library on Tuesdays from 1-5 pm. no appointment is necessary.
Two gifted poets will be coming to the library on Friday, March 24, at 7 pm. Helen Ruth Freeman, author of Diurnal Matters, and Doris Henderson, a local poet, will read from their selected works. Please join us for an enjoyable evening. Following the readings there will be a book signing and dessert reception.
On Friday, March 24, at 12:30 in the meeting room the movie A Room With a View will be shown. This is an elegant adaptation of E.M. Forsterâs novel about British manners and mores and a young womanâs awakening experiences during a trip (chaperoned of course) to Florence. Running time of 115 minutes. Rated PG.
 An Internet class for intermediate users will be held on March 25. The class will take place in the new meeting room from 10 am to noon. There is a $10 fee for the intermediate class and it is requested that you sign up at the circulation desk or by calling the library at 426-4533.
The space race... civil rights... the Vietnam War... Revisit one of the most revolutionary and influential decades in American history â the 1960s! The Friends of the Library are sponsoring an exciting new book discussion series. The next book to be discussed in the series will be The Autobography of Malcolm X on Tuesday, March 28 at 7pm in Quiet Study. Multiple copies of the books are available at the library. Remaining titles in the series are One Flew Over the Cuckooâs Nest by Ken Kesey on April 18, and The Things They Carried by Tim OâBrien on May 9. Please call the library if youâd like to join in this discussion. You need not read the entire book to attend.
For those of you who would like to join the discussion, but are having trouble finding the time to read the book, the library will be showing the film Malcolm X on Sunday, March 26, at 2 pm in the meeting room.
Think Spring and join us at the library for a slide show and talk on âCommon Diseases of the Perennial Gardens.â Sharon Douglas, a plant pathologist, will tell us how to keep leaf spots, root rot, powdery mildews, and other harmful problems out of our gardens. The program will take place on Tuesday, April 4, at 11 am in the new meeting room and is free.
Attention all history buffs: Bill Barrante will be returning to the library to give a four-part talk on the Civil War. Mr Barrante is a Watertown attorney who has a special interest in constitutional law and military history. In addition to giving lectures, he is a Civil War re-enactor, serving as adjutant of the 2nd Connecticut Volunteer Heavy Artillery. On Tuesday, April 11, Bill will talk about âJohn Hunt Morgan; the Confederate raider, cavalier of the South, and hero of the âLost Cause.ââ On Tuesday, April 18, Mr Barrante will discuss âStonewall Jackson.â On Tuesday, April 25, the topic will be âBattle of Cold Harborâ and on Wednesday, May 3, it will be a philosophical discussion on the American Civil Warâ âThe Right of Secession and the âLost Cause.ââ All talks will begin at 7 pm in the meeting room of the library. Please sign up at the circulation desk. All talks are free and refreshments will be served.
Yoga at the library continues on Thursday, March 23, and runs for four consecutive Thursdays. Ricky Ayers will be the instructor once again. The class will run from 4:45-6:15 and will be held in the meeting room.
