Hawley’s 2nd Grade

By Rachel Buethe And Kaitlin Eckert

As the second graders proceed in the Africa unit, they are learning many new things. Mrs Pesce’s class is learning about the desert, Mrs Tedesco’s class is learning about the savanna, Mrs Giordano’s class is learning about the rainforest, and Mrs Fanelli’s class is learning about the market place. They have learned things about the animals and plants in Africa. They have also learned about the people’s culture and the way they dress.

The second graders got a chance to go to every other class to do an African project. In Mrs Pesce’s class they learned how to write their names in Egyptian. In Mrs Fanelli’s class they made clay calabashes. In Mrs Giordano’s class they made African masks. And in Mrs Tedesco’s class they made masai collars.

“Africa Night” will be held on March 30, from 6 to 8:30 pm. Friends and family of the students will be able to go around to the different classrooms, which will be designed to look like the desert, the rain forest, the savanna, and the market place. The students and Mrs Zieman, the music teacher, will be singing African songs. “Jungle Juice” and “Tropical Trail Mix” will be served. It is going to be a fun night.

Besides learning about Africa, Mrs Pesce’s class is learning “double addition” in math. Mrs Tedesco’s class is reading a book called Mouse Soup. Mrs Giordano’s class is reviewing addition and subtraction by playing a fun game called “Around the World.” Mrs Fanelli’s class has been having a very fun time in the computer lab, which is one of their favorite things to do.

The students can’t wait till “Africa Night” and they are having fun in other subjects as well. The second graders are having a blast.
