Newcomers & Neighbors Club Supports Canstruction Project
The Newtown Newcomers & Neighbors Club is helping Newtown seventh graders build their Canstruction entry for the competition to be held May 11â25 at the Hartford Convention Center.
The seventh graders, participants in the middle schoolâs gifted program, have chosen to construct a huge food pyramid, a suitable choice for an charity event of the design and construction industry that is designed to help feed the hungry.Â
This year in 80 cities throughout the United States, Canada, and England, teams of people, working with architects and design specialists, will be constructing enormous sculptures composed entirely of cans of food.
To see some of the prior yearsâ projects, visit canstruction.org. After the winners are selected and a display period for the projects, all the entries are dismantled and the cans donated to area food banks.
Since this is a design competition, specific types of cans are needed for construction. The following cans are needed:
*Grains â Soup, either Chicken Noodle or Chicken Rice, or Corn. Can size must be 10¾ oz, 4 by 2-5/8  inches
*Vegetables â Green beans, can size 14.5 oz, 4-1/2 by 2-7/8 inches
*Fruits â Crushed tomatoes, can size 14.5 oz, 4-1/2 by 2-7/8 inches
*Meats/beans â Beans, ban size 15.5 oz, 4-3/8 by 2-7/8 inches
*Dairy â Evaporated milk, can size 12 oz, 3-3/8 by 2-7/8 inches
They will need the most cans from the grains category, followed by vegetables and fruits, then meats/beans and finally dairy.
Deadline to get the items to the middle school is April 24.
Anyone who would like to help this cause can contact Layne Lescault of Newtown Newcomers & Neighbors at 270-6481. Cans as well as cash contributions will be accepted.
