Speak Up For Kids And Clean Water

To the Editor:

The water situation at Middle Gate School is deplorable. As the situation stands now, bottled water is being brought in to drink and cook with. However, the children use the contaminated water to wash their hands and then they apply an antibacterial gel as an added precaution to kill the germs. Some parents do not even know that the children are doing this! Some of the many contaminants that have tested positive for have been coliform, E. coli, uranium, and radon. Uranium and radon are being treated with a water treatment system. This system has to be maintained regularly.

This Band-Aid approach is of great concern to me and I know many other parents included. First of all, safe hand washing and prudent application of this gel are necessary to kill bacteria. How many elementary school age children are extremely thoughtful when washing their hands? Are the children being monitored as they wash their hands? Certainly not the ones who are using the hallway bathrooms. Why do we put our children at a needless risk? E. coli is so dangerous for young children. And no amount of hand washing will get rid of radon or uranium. True, the water is being treated but it will always be a major concern. Radon is dangerous inhaled and when the water is run the gas gets into the air.

I find it ridiculous to debate the issue of clean, safe water for our children at school, and I find it especially astounding that safe clean water for growing precious children was voted against! The cost to fix this problem will not get cheaper and will only get greater as the years go by. Do we need a child to get sick and the threat of lawsuits looming before we do something?

Let’s be proactive! Please speak up for our children and attend the Booth Library on Wednesday, February 18, at 7:30 pm, where the Legislative Council of the Board of Finance will be voting on the water issue. See you there!
