This week in 1991
Newtown High basketball players Karl Fischer and Rob Bassett got permission
from coach Kevin O'Sullivan to have the team sew American Flag patches on its
game jerseys in support of the US troops in the Persian Gulf. Fischer's
brother Larry was a US Marine stationed in Kuwait. In its first game with the
flag on its chest, NHS beat Bethel 75-68 as Mike Sullivan pumped in a
career-high 28 points and Bassett added 19. Bethel's Sean Fesh scored 23
points including five three pointers.
This week in 1986
Newtown's Barbara Kasbarian, a 16-year executive secretary with the Newtown
Parks and Recreation Department, replaced Bob Ceccolini as the Department's
new Director. Mrs Kasbarian was selected from a group of 20 applicants for the
position.
This week in 1981
NHS junior Mike Gay busted his own school swimming record in the 100 breast
stroke as he did it in 1:06.5 in a 91-81 Newtown win over Hamden. Gay then
beat it again two days later posting a 1:06 in a 91-81 NHS loss to Watertown.
Other Newtown standouts in the two meets included Dave Spaulding, Bob Olah,
Glen Atkinson, Mike and Pat Kutka, Pat Karpacz, and Paul Kemna.
This week in 1976
The Newtown High School boys' freshman basketball team got 14 points apiece
from Steve Kordish and Chuck Guck, but lost for the first time all season
falling 64-50 to Joel Barlow. In varsity action that night, Rich Scanlon
scored 16 points and pulled in 14 rebounds leading the Indians to a 63-55 win
over Weston.
This week in 1971
As reported by Newtown's Gary Leavitt in his weekly " Eye On The High "
column, the NHS boys' basketball team demolished O'Brien Tech, 69-31,
launching a full-court press and spreading out a balanced scoring attack.
Scott Wallace led the Newtown charge with 23 points, Charlie Jacobi scored
ten, and Steve Edwards added eight.
This week in 1966
In NHS intramural basketball, the Goliaths beat the winless Beatles 16-9
behind the high-scoring efforts of Pete Mayberry. Bob Taylor was the standout
for the Beatles in defeat. In a major player trade, the Beatles acquired Bob
Totten from the Goliaths for Milt Roamine who had recently been placed on the
league's active list. The Bombers, Wizards, and Goliaths were all 4-2 in the
standings and the Beatles were in last place at 0-6.
This week in 1961
The Town Hall gym was jumping as the SAC Midgets basketball team beat St Rose,
38-22. Fred Crouch scored 17 points to pave the way for the winners while Tim
Powell added six and Art Weile added five. Murphy led St Rose with 15.
This week in 1956
Dick Maye pumped in 18 points and team captain Bob Ryan added 15, but the
Hawley High basketball team lost 61-55 to New Milford. Ed Thomas and Bob
Benton combined for 16 NHS points in the contest as well.
This week in 1951
The Newtown High girls' basketball team held off a late-game Bethel rally and
came away with a 26-23 victory. Janet Berglund and Nancy Oberstadt scored
eight points each to lead the winners while Pat McMahon scored six. In the
girls' jayvee game, Kathleen McMahon netted 14 points in a 22-16 Newtown win.
This week in 1946
After a close and exciting first half the Hawley High School girls' basketball
team behind the scoring efforts of forwards Nancy Baxter, Shirley Shannon, and
Mary Lou Bradley rallied late to romp New Milford, 40-24. Baxter and Shannon
scored 15 points each in the victory and Bradley added the game's other ten.
Bradley then netted a season-high 22 points in an NHS 60-15 win over Woodbury,
who had been out of basketball for three years before recently reforming the
program.
This week in 1941
The Newtown Bowling League reached the half-way point in its season with Bill
Kayfus and his Owls team winning top honors with a 33-9 record. Harry
MacClymon's Buzzards captured second-place honors. Shorty Conger of the Robins
led the league with a three-game high score of 383, Andy Wheeler of the Crows
had the high-single game of 153 and the highest average at 108, while George
Clark of the Swans posted the high no-mark game with a 94.
This week in 1936
The Hawley High boys' basketball team was victorious in a low-scoring
defensive battle with Woodbury, winning 16-11. Linc Mitchell scored eight
points to lead the winners while Shipley added six and Cascio the other two.
