Mr Cruson will be discussing the activities of the Underground Railroad and the abolitionist movement in Fairfield County as well as shedding light on some uncovered objects and artifacts directly traceable to this historically significant period in our countryâs history. Mr Cruson, a former teacher of history and anthropology at Joel Barlow High School in Redding, serves as Newtownâs Town Historian and is also president of the Archaeological Society of Connecticut.
The lecture compliments the museumâs summer exhibition, which features a special display on the Underground Railroad and abolitionist movement. In addition it profiles the life of Jesse Hine, a former slave, who arrived in Brookfield via the Underground Railroad during the Civil War through the active help of the abolitionists of Brookfield. The exhibit will be open through August each Saturday and the first Sunday of each month between noon and 4 pm or by special appointment.
