Setting Priorities For The United Way

To the Editor:

Recently I had the privilege of joining over 100 of our community members to help the United Way of Northern Fairfield County prioritize its goals and determine how it will invest its donors’ money this year. United Way is a volunteer driven organization, and it relies on community residents to share their time and expertise in shaping the direction of its goals. This year volunteers served on four Community Impact Councils (Community Wellness, Encouraging Community Involvement, Increasing Self-Sufficiency, and Successful Kids and Strong Families) and developed outcomes that will improve our region.

Representatives from area towns, local businesses, faith-based communities, school systems, nonprofit agencies, donors, and local funding organizations met in November to determine which community outcomes were most critical. With the help of the WCSU Math Department, a formula was developed that allowed United Way to align next year’s funding with the prioritized outcomes.

I have served as the chair of United Way’s Community Planning Council for the last two years, and am proud to say that the direction the United Way is taking is truly a product of our community as a whole. United Way is uniquely positioned because its partnerships, community knowledge, corporate relationships, and money are all resources that are used effectively to direct lasting change in our area. What matters is not just serving more people with a particular need, but actually reducing or eliminated that need.

Sincerely,

Michelle James
