STC students entering grades 6 through 11 have been busy so far this summer rehearsing, building sets, and designing costumes for the popular musical This is the sixth summer production staged by STC, an interdistrict cooperative program funded by Connecticut’s Department of Education and coordinated by staff from Newtown High School and Education Connection.

Open to students from towns including Bethel, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Danbury, Easton, New Fairfield, New Milford, Redding, and Ridgefield, the program provides students with the chance to be involved in a theatrical production, as well as to meet students from other Connecticut districts.

The STC production of Cinderella is a classic fairy tale originally written by Charles Perrault. After being immortalized in an animated masterpiece by Walt Disney in 1950, Rodgers and Hammerstein adopted it into a televised musical in 1957. Julie Andrews starred in the title role.

A 1965 remake of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical starred Lesley Ann Warren. It was most recently brought to ABC for the Wonderful World of Disney in 1997 and starred Brandy Norwood and Whitney Houston.

Popular songs from the production include “Impossible/It’s Possible,” “Ten Minutes Ago,” “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?” and “A Lovely Night.”

Cinderella will be performed at Newtown High School on July 30 at 7:30 pm and on July 31 at 3 pm. Reserved seating is $15, general admission seating is $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. For ticket information and purchases, contact STC director Sabrina Post at 270-6150, ext 1162.

In addition to rehearsing for Cinderella, STC students are actively involved in a variety of daily theater workshops. This summer, students entering grades 3 through 5 have also become involved in STC. As a “special treat,” they will be performing their own musical cabaret variety show on July 28 at 6:30 pm at Newtown High School. Admission summer evening celebration of fun, song and dance is free of charge.
