Reminder: Keep Seniors Safe
Reminder: Keep Seniors Safe
According to the most current and available data, an estimated 1 to 2 million Americans age 65 or older have been injured, exploited, or otherwise mistreated by someone on whom they depended on for care or protection.
It is also estimated that for every one of these cases, including cases of self-neglect, that are reported to the proper authorities, five will go unreported.
Connecticut has a wide array of services designed to protect its seniors both at home and in nursing facilities. If elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation is suspected, contact any one of the many resources available: the local police department (Newtownâs routine call line is 426-5841), Protective Services for the Elderly at 888-385-4225, or the Office of the Chief Stateâs Attorney at 860-258-5838.
For nursing facility concerns, contact the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program at 866-388-1888.
For more information about community resources available to assist older adults and their families, contact the Newtown Commission on Aging at 270-4271 or the Area Agency on Aging at 800-994-9422.
