Adoptive Parents Group Meetings

WESTPORT –– Adoptive parents or parents considering adoption are invited to attend upcoming Adoptive Parents Committee information meetings featuring speakers on adoption topics.

On Monday, October 13, therapist Nancy Borders will facilitate a workshop entitled “Adoption and the Schools” at 7 pm at the United Methodist Church of Westport/Weston. She will cover such topics as deciding whether or not to discuss adoption with school professionals, how to advocate for adoption within the schools, and other thorny issues for parents. A parent by birth and adoption, she works with Westside Associates for Child Therapy.

On Saturday, October 18, at 8 pm the Adoptive Parents Committee will host two concurrent workshops. Dr Carol Weitzman of the Yale International Clinic will discuss “Evaluating International Referrals” and Cathy Danowski of New Beginnings Family Services will facilitate the discussion on “Respecting Diversity in Multi-Cultural Families.”

From 6 to 8 pm will be pre-adoption workshops. Following the 8 pm workshops, will be pre-adoption “Strategies for Happy Holidays” and post-adoption “How to Deal with Bullies, Teasers, and Other Meanies.”

Participants are invited to stay for the monthly roundtable discussion on adoption issues. The church is located on Route 57, one-fourth mile north of the Merritt Parkway at Exit 42.

The Adoptive Parents Committee is a volunteer organization providing adoption information, education, and support throughout the tri-state area. For more information, visit the website at www.adoptiveparents.org or call 203-371-5787.
