Skateboarding
Is A Sport, Too
To the Editor:
When I asked my son why a skateboard park would be good for Newtown, he replied, âIt would be a good investment for the town. It would provide a place where kids, like myself, could skate in a safe environment.â Right now in Newtown, there is nowhere for skateboarders to practice their sport. Newtownâs skateboarders need a skateboard park!
Not every child in Newtown participates in traditional sports, like football, soccer, and baseball. Over the years the town has provided so many wonderful fields for these children to practice and play their sports on. What if they didnât have these fields available to them? How would they feel? Probably the same way my son and other skateboarders feel right now. The town is not providing the skateboarding athletes a place to skate.
Last year my son, along with two other classmates, participated in the Middle School Scarecrow contest. Their Donate to Skate Scarecrow enabled them to present a donation to the Donate to Skate Campaign. He has since gone on to raise another $100 by collecting cans and bottles and doing odd jobs. Iâve reminded him that every dollar raised makes the dream of a skateboard park that much closer.
Donate to Skate is having a fundraiser on October 25. All of the information is on the Donatetoskate.com website. I would ask that you please stop by and see for yourself the incredible people and kids trying to make the dream of a skateboard park a reality.
Skateboarding is a sport too! Itâs time that people recognize it as one. Please support these athletes!
