Playshop To Host Reading Of ‘Camping,’ Sunday

WILTON — On Sunday, November 20, at 2 pm, The Wilton Playshop will present a staged reading of Mark St Germain’s Camping with Henry and Tom, about a camping trip with Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and then-President Warren G. Harding.

This will be the first of a new series, Staged Readings @ The Wilton Playshop, the theatre has planned for its 69th season. This month’s reading will feature veteran Playshop actors and directors David Halliwell as Edison, Tom Costaggini as Ford, Tom Rushen as Harding, and the creator of the series and Playshop fourth VP Keith Harjes as Harding’s Secret Service man Colonel Starling.

The reading will be directed by Skip Ploss, a longtime Playshop director, producer, designer and past president.

There will be a wine and cheese reception, as well as an opportunity to chat with the actors and director about the play, following the presentation.

Camping with Henry and Tom showcases a fictional event within a historical one. Henry Ford and Thomas Edison took camping trips starting about 1914 with other men “of stature” like Harvey Firestone and Edgar Rice Burroughs. It is also a fact, according to playwright, that the trip around July 24, 1921, was the first and only one attended by President Warren G. Harding. This was also the last time Thomas Edison went along.

Mr Germain offers an intriguing dialogue between three great men based on historical fact, quotes and writings about them all set around a campfire in the Maryland woods near Licking Creek. Mr Ploss warns parents that Camping… contains some language and subject matter that they may find inappropriate for young children.

Tickets for Sunday’s reading are $5 and can be reserved by calling The Playshop Box Office at 203-762-7629.
