Children’s Programs

Story Hour Registration: Register October 22-31 for the next session of story hours.  Weekly

story times are offered for two-year-olds:  Monday-Thursday, 10-10:30 and 3-5 year olds: Tuesday-Thursday, 1-1:45 and Thursday, 11-11:45. Classes begin the week of November 5. Children must be 2 or 3 years old by November 5 and a resident of Newtown to be eligible for the program. No phone registrations will be accepted.  For more information call the children’s department: 426-3851.

Young Adult Drama Workshop: Young adults, ages 11-13 are invited to sign up for a four-part drama workshop Thursdays 4:15-5:30, October 25-November 15.  The workshop is designed to introduce participants to basic acting techniques through the use of theater games and scene work. Cynthia Wagnerman, a published playwright, will conduct the workshops. Enrollment is limited to 12.  For more information call: 426-3851.

Author! Author!: The dynamic duo, Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen, author and illustrator of the popular Magic School Bus series, will be signing copies of the first book in their new series, Miss Frizzle’s Adventures–Ancient Egypt, Sunday, November 11, 2-3:30 p.m. in the C.H. Booth Library meeting room. Prior to the signing there will be a slide show and a question and answer session.  Mark your calendars and don’t miss this opportunity to meet these wonderful children’s authors and get a personalized copy of one of their books for yourself or to give as a gift.  Several titles  will be available for purchase the day of the program.

Adult Programs

Fantastic Crop Circles: Come learn about new discoveries in the world of cerealogy, (study of crop circles). Crop designs have been discovered all around the planets for decades during growing season, but none so fascinatingly filled with details as those found near a British Ministry of Defense radio telescope between August 14 and August 19.  Come learn about some exciting new possibilities of what it all may mean.  Refreshments will be served.

Yoga:             Ricky Ayers is offering a yoga class on  Thursdays from 4:45-6:15.  Call Ricky directly for more details at 757-4150.

Partners in Crime: A Mystery Book Discussion Series. This book discussion will explore the relationships of three very different mystery solving couples. On October 30, Evil Angels Among Them by Kate Charles will be discussed at 7:30 pm in the special collections room on the third floor.  Some copies of the titles are available at the library.  Please sign up at the circulation desk or by calling 426-4533.

Genealogy Help: Every Monday from 2 to 4 pm Harlan Jessup provides free genealogy help in the genealogy room.  No need to register, but you may want to call ahead to confirm that Mr Jessup will be there.

Family Counseling Center: The Family Counseling Center is sponsoring a free monthly workshop on mental health issues of interest to families and individuals from 7 to 8:30 pm on Tuesday, October 23.  This month’s topic is “The Depressed Child.”

Free Blood Pressure Screening: Ashlar sponsors a free blood pressure screening in the genealogy room from 10-12 on the fourth Wednesday of every month.  No need to register; just stop by.
