Caring For The Clock
Caring For The Clock
To the Editor:
I thoroughly enjoyed Kendra Bobowickâs article in last weekâs Bee describing the Edmond Town Hall clock [âHobbyist Tends Town Clocks, Time After Time,â A9]. I also was very pleased to read about Jerry Valentaâs care and enthusiasm for the old tower clock. I remember well climbing up and up and up at Francis Hiduâs suggestion to actually inspect and admire the clock face-to-face.
As a member of the Board of Managers of the Edmond Town Hall for several years, I marveled at the knowledge of antique clocks that another Jerry had; and he loved to oversee the same clock. He was Jerry Jackson, Jr, son of Jerome Jackson, who was the architect for the new âoffice wingâ of the Edmond Town Hall.
I was also aware and loved the sound of the chimes that the clock proudly sounded until some Main Street neighbors objected. I live in Sandy Hook and never could evaluate the annoyance of the 24-hour chime sounds! Jerry Jackson effected the quieting of chimes and complaints (Jerry lived in Sandy Hook also.) It is very reassuring that another competent Jerry is on the job in the clock tower with Chris Locke. May the clock continue to display the time of day or night to all who glance at the tower cupola.
Mary Hawley wisely chose an excellent and substantial system for a beautiful gift to Newtown: the Edmond Town Hall. It was intended to survive if properly cared for! Thanks to Jerry Jackson, Jerry Valenta, Chris Locke, and many others who may be motivated and generous with their time in the future so that such precious jewels in our town will be enjoyed for years to come.
