Planning For 2007 Relay For Life Beginning

By John Voket

Let’s get ready to REEEEELAAAAYYYYY!

If you are just beginning to make long-range plans for the new year, mark your calendar for Saturday, June 9, and Sunday, June 10, 2007. Those will be the dates for the next American Cancer Society Relay for Life, which will be held once again in the stadium at Newtown High School.

The annual fund and awareness-raising community-wide event will begin Saturday evening at 7 pm and draw to a close the next morning at 7 am.

Organizers have announced the first planning meeting for the 4th Annual Relay For Fife of Newtown will be this Wednesday, October 25, at 7 pm in the high school lecture Hall. Anyone interested in being a part of the planning process for the 2007 Relay is welcome to attend.

Dawn Escoda, who is working on preliminary plans, is asking potential and established teams to start thinking about fundraising now.

“Hold a harvest fair/party, chili cook-off, holiday cookie bake-off, family game night, pot-luck dinner, movie night, World Series party, or some other creative activity,” Ms Escoda suggested. “Everyone is looking for something fun to do during the fall and winter, so why not raise money for your team at the same time.”

Interested individuals can also start growing their hair for Locks of Love, she added.

“This was such a huge success in 2006 that we will be raising money for our Relay and donating hair to Locks of Love again next year,” Ms Escoda said.

Nominations are also being sought for next year’s honorary chair to Relay for life of Newtown. Anyone interested in making a nomination can send it to PO Box 831, Newtown CT 06470. Be sure to include the full name of the nominee, and why they are being nominated.

The honorary chair will be announced at the kick-off in January. For more information, contact Ms Escoda at 270-7541.
