Quick Center Film Series

Continues January 26

FAIRFIELD — Repentance, a searing look at the brutal repression of the Stalinist era, will be screened Monday, January 26, at 7 pm, at Fairfield University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. The film is being shown as part of the Quick Center’s ongoing Russian Arts and Letters Festival.

Darkly introspective and beautifully imagined by director Tengiz Abuladze, Repentance centers on a mysterious woman and the death of a harsh village ruler in a somewhat surreal Russian community. In the 1987 film, the woman is put on trial for repeatedly digging up the body of Varlam, the town’s recently deceased leader.

As the trial progresses, viewers learn that the woman’s parents died under Varlam’s reign of terror, along with many other innocents. Each ghastly revelation speaks to the repression and, in turn, heroic sacrifices under Stalinist rule.

Some light Russian foods will be available for an additional cost at each of the film screenings. Future films in the series are Vanya on 42nd Street on February 9, East-West on March 8, and The Russian Ark on March 21.

Tickets are $7. For tickets, call the Quick Center box office at 203-254-4010 or 877-ARTS-396. For more information visit www.QuickCenter.com.
