Occupation: I’m an independent scientific consultant. My company is Mandrake Scientific consulting. I’m a pharmacologist by training and I help small companies that are developing new medical devices.

Family: My wonderful husband, Peter, and I have been married for 24 years. We have three boys, David, Matthew, and Joshua. Joshua is married to Maureen and they live in Minnesota with our beautiful 1-year-old granddaughter, Charlotte.

Pets: We have no shortage of pets! We have two horses, Sunny and Lobo, and Franny the donkey; two dogs, Tucker, a springer spaniel, and Doc, a golden retriever; and three cats, Eliot, Figaro, and Rudolfo. The two “operatic” cats live in the barn, and Eliot is a housecat.

How long have you lived in Newtown? We moved here three years ago from southern California when Peter took a job with a small medical device company in Shelton.

What do you like to do in your free time? The biggest thing is to ride. If I’m not out riding, I’m walking Doc and Tucker through the woods. I love to read, too, but there’s not a lot of spare time outside of work and riding.

Do you have a favorite book? I read a lot of different types of books. Right now I’m reading A Thousand Splendid Suns and I just finished reading Life and Death Is Getting Me Down. I like to read books that transport me to a different time and place and let you see the world through different eyes.

Do you have a favorite travel destination? We go back to Minnesota a lot these days to see our granddaughter. If we had our druthers, though, we love Hawaii and the coast of Mexico.

What is the best thing about Newtown? I think the trails, and for me it has been the equestrian community. Without that, I never would have met anybody since I work from home. The Newtown Bridle Lands Association has been a real support system for me.

Do you have a hero? My husband is probably the person I admire the most. He’s made a life for himself after a rough beginning and has become a leader in the industry he works in, so he’s my role model, I think.

Do you have a personal philosophy? I like to say, “When in doubt, proceed with confidence.” Don’t let your fear of the unknown keep you from doing something new. Sometimes you don’t get where you thought you would, but usually you end up somewhere interesting, anyway.

Do you have a guilty pleasure? Oh, yes. Chocolate milkshakes. I crave them, but don’t give in too often. I dream about the milkshakes at the Creamery.
