Juniors Launch Annual Backpack Program
Juniors Launch Annual Backpack Program
The Newtown Junior Womenâs Club is kicking off its Eighth Annual Backpack Program. This program was launched to assist families in need of getting their children ready for the school year with a backpack and all necessary school supplies for the year.
The townâs Social Services Department administers the list in order to maintain confidentially.
Last year Social Services said 112 filled backpacks were needed for grades kindergarten through 12, forcing the Juniors to increase their budget to $3,500. Another increase is anticipated this year.
âWe work hard to find every opportunity to save on costs,â said Backpack Committee Chairperson Betsy Paynter. âBackpacks are stockpiled throughout the year in order to take advantage of sales and promotions. We are fortunate to have found a school supply distributor that grants us a charitable organization discount.â
The Juniors are looking for help in funding this program. It costs approximately $30 for each filled backpack.
âPlease consider funding a backpack or two,â Ms Paynter appealed. âWe gladly accept donations of new backpacks or suitable products such as toothpaste, tissues, etc if you or your employer/company prefer.â
The Newtown Junior Womenâs Club is an organization comprised of civic-minded women who are working toward the one goal of giving back to the community. They accomplish this by volunteering their time both to create and successfully complete many community projects such as Discovery Science & Math Workshops, Tag-A-Gift Program, Thanksgiving Basket, J. Symes Scholarship Fund, and Back to School Backpacks.
