Nighthawk Swimmers Cap Regular Season With Ten Wins

Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team wrapped up the regular season with a pair of wins this past week to conclude the campaign at an impressive 10-1.

The Nighthawks went to Monroe and defeated host Masuk 97-81 on October 21, earning first place in all of the swimming events along the way. Newtown then bested New Fairfield 99-85 in Tuesday’s Senior Night meet.

“It’s always nice to send the seniors off with a win at home in their last duel meet,” Newtown Coach Zach Gauvin said. “Overall we were 10-1 this season, and it’s been great to see the girls come together and really become a team this season.”

Top Finishers were as follows:

200 Yard Medley Relay – first, 1:59.79 Kelley Baylis, Zoe Eggleston, Kelsey McEvoy, Amy Martinelli. 200 Freestyle – second, Abby Fagerholm 2:09.54. 200 Individual Medley – second, Zoe Eggleston 2:27.07. 50 Free – first, Kelsey McEvoy 26.64; second, Amy Martinelli 26.78; third, Kelley Baylis 27.56. “Now that the duel meets are over it’s crunch time for our swimmers, because we want to achieve our team goals set in August. Luckily we’re in a good position to do that because of the work put in over the past couple months,” Gauvin said.

The Nighthawks will practice and prepare for the postseason, which gets underway with the South-West Conference championships — the diving competition November 3 at New Fairfield at 6 pm and the swimming events November 5 at Masuk at 3:30 pm.
