CYC / Good Friend
Sailing Challenge
NEW MILFORD â The Candlewood Yacht Club and the Good Friend program will hold their annual CYC/Good Friend Sailing Challenge on Sunday, July 9, and Sunday, August 20, at 11 am.
Good Friend is a professionally run social service program which provides adult mentors to children ages 7 to 14 from one-parent families to help build a childâs self-esteem.Â
The CYC / Good Friend Sailing Challenge provides the opportunity for these kids to spend an afternoon experiencing something that they simply would never get the chance to experience otherwise. It pairs a qualified skipper with two or three of the Good Friend guests. After a brief introduction to sailing in which the child learns to handle the lines, sails, and helm, the race begins.
Included are about five short races in which the children practice teamwork, race rules, and competitive spirit. They also have a chance to go swimming and fishing off the docks. This program is so successful that the two dates that the Candlewood Yacht Club have set up this year with Good Friend already has a waiting list of more than 20 people.
