Dealers Refurnish Historic House Museum For 3 Week Antiques Show

By Roderic Blackburn

KINDERHOOK, N.Y. -- Saturday evening, June 20, saw the opening of a double

header event on the ancient locust lawns of the Luykas Van Alen House, a

National Historic Landmark and one of the finest early Dutch houses surviving

in New York.

The attraction in historic Kinderhook, settled in the 1660s, was an elegant

preview reception for two antiques shows held simultaneously.

In the 1737 Van Alen House, a dozen leading New York dealers completely

refurnished the museum in period antiques -- all for sale. This created a

stunning effect, as candlelight glittered off of Delftware, Dutch Seventeenth

Century furniture, polished period brassware, and high-style New York colonial

objects. Proceeds of the catered reception preview and part of the sale of

loaned objects will benefit the restoration of the house, now undergoing

architectural study with grants from the Getty and Warhol foundations.

Dealers who furnished the house included: from New York City, Bernard and S.

Dean Levy, Leigh Keno, Cora Ginsburg, and Hirschl & Adler Galleries; from

Southampton, Morgan MacWinnie; from Ulster County, Robert Slater (Cedar Hill

Antiques) and Jenkinstown Antiques; from Dutchess County, R&M Leed and Dolores

Rogers Murphy Antiques; from Columbia County, Bruce Sikora-Antiquarian, K.

Kermani Oriental Rugs Inc, Willard Vine Clerk Wonderful Things, John Anderson

Foxfire Ltd, Steven Anderson Antiques, Hudson Antiques Associates, and R.H.

Blackburn and Associate.

Outside on the lawn under a giant tent the champagne and wine flowed freely as

patrons and dealers discovered the treasures of dozens of dealers set up for

the 25th Annual Van Alen Antiques Festival, for the first time this year

managed by Oliver & Gannon Associates of Altamont, N.Y. A whole array of

dealers new to this show enlivened the buying interest of patrons on Saturday

and by the general public throughout the next day.
