Tall Case Clock Strikes $8,500 At Harris

W/6 CUTS-SS

MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA -- The Gene Harris Antique Auction Center conducted its

62nd Semi-Annual "Clock and Watch Auction" on October 2-3 with more than two

hundred registered bidders from eighteen states participating.

An oak Halford & Son, London tall case clock with mercury pendulum and nine

tubes struck the bid of $8,500 to lead the other auction lots. There was no

buyer's premium charged at this auction, as a Gene Harris courtesy to fellow

members of the NAWCC. Auctioneer Tom Harris called the auction, along with his

father, Auctioneer Gene Harris. Brother Jeff Harris assisted with the clock

auction.

A nine-tube Tiffany & Company Herchedes tall case clock came in second with a

bid of $5,500. Close behind, for $5,000, was a German, five-tube grandfather

clock, accentuated by three brass ball finials, atop an exceptional mahogany

tall case. An English Westminster gong strike tall case, with heavy carving,

circa 1820, brought the same price.

Standing over nine feet tall, a Tiffany & Company English tall case timed

fourth place with a bid of $3,750. An early Thomas Lister oak carved tall

case, topped by eagle and ball finial was a "buy" at $2,500.

All original, a wall hanging advertising clock, almost four feet tall, sold

for $2,100. A bid of $1,200 "bagged" a handcarved stag top German cuckoo clock

with crossed muskets, a brace of rabbit and quail, three weights and a musical

chime.

Eighth place went to a five-tube Westminster chime Herchedes tall case clock

with a bid of $1,100. A French marble mantle statue clock posed for ninth

place with a bid of $1,050. Tenth place found yet another tie with a bid of

$1,000 between a Birge & Fuller double fusee steeple mantle clock with ball

feet and a Gustav Becker three-weight wall hanging Vienna regulator clock.

The Friday afternoon session offered an excellent variety of fine watches.

Leading the pack was a Rockford Model 800, 18s, 24j, 18k hunting case with

backup case, at $1,225. With up and down indicator, open face, and Elgin 23j,

16s pocket watch sold for $900. A Hamilton Model 993, 16s, 21j, 14k multicolor

gold case with .10 diamonds mounted in hunter case sold for $775.

Adjusting to six positions, an open face Illinois Sagono Special, 23j, dated

1916 sold for $600 while a Hamilton Watch Company, Model 950, 16s, 23j, gold

plated pocket watch was $550. An Illinois Sagano Special, 23j, 14k open face

case brought $525.

A Hampden special railroad watch, 14k hunting case, 18s, 23j from 1889, sold

for $450, and an open face Hamilton Model 992, 16s, 21j, $375.

The 63rd Semi-Annual Clock & Watch Auction will be May 7, followed by all day

auction on May 8. For more information, 1-800/862-6674.
