Battle Of Gettysburg Final Episode Lecture Scheduled
BROOKFIELD CENTER â Peter Cronin will give a lecture and visual presentation on the events of Day Three of the Battle of Gettysburg on Monday, June 4, at 7:30 pm, in the Brookfield Historical Ssocietyâs museum, located at the intersection of Routes 25 and 133.
When the troops awoke on the morning of July 3, 1863, 150,000 Union and Rebel soldiers found themselves sweltering in the hot summer sun. At the same time, Confederate General James Longstreet was trying in vain to dissuade his commander, General Robert E. Lee, from executing a plan to launch a frontal assault on the center of the Union line, which waited across the Emmitsburg Road behind hastily erected stone walls.
Mr Cronin will focus his discussion on the results of that decision and other events that occurred during the last day of the great battle. The presentation is part of the continuing forum on the Civil War sponsored by the historical society. The public is invited, admission is free, and complimentary refreshments will be served.
