Moving-Up Nostalgia

To the Editor,

Hello from the other side of the Earth, and thank you for the coverage of the 8th Grade Moving-up Ceremony in the 16 June issue. I must confess to serious nostalgia, as I was a member of the first official Moving-up Ceremony in 1975.

It’s quite terrifying to think that what was started in that long-ago year by Jack Lynch is now considered a “tradition” – I am certain that he would be pleased to think that his idea of elevating the achievements of the entire group of students, as well as diminishing the fears of moving to the Big School, had been carried on this long. The photographs of the students look quite a bit more mature than I remember at that age, but surely that must be the nature of growing older.

I wish all those bright young faces the best of luck in the coming four years.

Best Regards,

Nikki Buxton
