Occupation: I am retired from Uniroyal where I was the national sales manager for the Power Transmission Division. After I retired, I went back to work as an account executive at Decker Rickard, an ad agency in Glastonbury. After that I was sales manager at Flennor Division of Norco in Ridgefield. I retired from there in 1997. I earned a BS in marketing from Fordham University.

How Long in Newtown: I have lived in Newtown 28 years in August. Prior to that I lived in Medford Lakes, N.J.

Biggest Change Seen in Town: Two things – traffic and disappearing open land.

Family: My wife, Luella, and I have been married for 43 years. We have four children, Mary, John, Monica, and Mark, and seven grandchildren, Teresa, Claire, and Joe in Minnesota, twins Molly and Jack in New York, and Thomas and Patricia in Georgia.

Hobbies: Fishing is the top of the list. I also participate in the “At Our Gate” program of the Knights of Columbus. We help local people with limited income to maintain their property. It’s fun. They’re a good bunch of guys. I’ve learned a lot through doing different things. There’s a lot of camaraderie.  I’ve seen as many as 45 people working at a time. I also enjoy gardening, though we have too much shade now to have a vegetable garden. I coached Pop Warner football for 15 years when the boys were called Mighty Mites. I’ve seen boys I coached go on to Newtown High School and play in four championship games.

Favorite Books and Authors: I love to read. For reading for fun I enjoy books by Clive Cussler and Dale Brown. I enjoyed Dale Brown’s Silver Tower and Cussler’s Raise the Titanic. For serious reading, I like C.S. Lewis and Thomas Sowell.

Favorite TV Show: Sports. I seldom watch anything else on TV.

Organizations: I have been a member of the Knights of Columbus for 50 years. I’m a member of St Rose of Lima Church.

Most Vivid Memory of Newtown: One of my most vivid memories was when we first moved into our house. The following week lightning hit our well, and we were without water. That was a shocking introduction to the town. I also remember when my son Mark was playing football and Newtown High School beat Immaculate in 1980. Mark had two interceptions and was the leading ground gainer in that game. That was pretty exciting. I also remember when we were new in town and my daughter, Mary, won the Western Connecticut Conference tennis singles title. No one knew who she was because she was so new to town.

Favorite Vacation Spot: It used to be the beach at Brigatine, N.J., but now it’s visiting the grandchildren.

Personal Philosophy: The Golden Rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Also, tell it the way it is. PC language is destroying our language and means of communication.
