Zimmermann Cited For Farm Series

Andrea Zimmermann, a reporter for The Newtown Bee, has won the Connecticut

Agricultural Journalism Award for Best Series/Weekly Newspaper for her five

part series on Farming in Newtown, which began May 19, 1995.

The series included the history of farming in the area, traditional farming,

horticultural farming, and the future of farming. Local third-generation

farmers, young farmers, and State Commissioner of Agriculture Shirley Ferris

of Newtown were among those interviewed for the series.

Andrea received her award on March 20, Agriculture Day, at a ceremony held in

the lobby of the State Capitol Building. Bob Heffernan, Chairman of the

Connecticut Agricultural Information Council, presented the award. Lt Governor

Jodi Rell and Commissioner of Agriculture Shirley Ferris also participated in

the ceremonies.

Ms Zimmermann has been a writer for The Bee since July of 1993.

The two other journalists who received awards at the ceremonies were Sam

Libby, a freelance journalist, who received Best Feature Story/Daily Newspaper

for his article "Out Of The Shell" which appeared in the Hartford Courant

Business Weekly; and Walter Kidd of the New Milford Times who received Best

Photography/Weekly Newspaper for "It's Apple Pickin' Time!"

Michael Arisco, owner of Michael's Greenhouses in Cheshire, won the Young
