Slo-Pitch - Traded For A Six Pack

In the second year of the Newtown Slo-Pitch Softball League, Rick Matern,

George Matern, and Jack Matern were all on the roster for Solly's Wayside

Tavern. In a 1974 meeting against Honeychurch Realtors, Honeychurch was short

players and couldn't play. Solly's then traded Jack Matern, then a sophomore

in high school, to Honeychurch for a six pack of beer.

Jack and Honeychurch went on to win the championship that year and the next

before being reunited with Rick after Solly's disolved and Rick joined

Honeychurch, by then Matty's Restaurant.

George joined his brothers in 1979 as did the youngest Matern, Chris, then a

sophomore in high school.

With at least one Matern on his team, Tony DeCarlo won 15 league

championships. Honeychurch and its legendary coach had obviously pulled off

the best trade in league history that fateful day in 1974.
