Board Considers 96-97 School Calendar

Newtown public schools will be open on Veterans' Day, according to the
proposed 1996-97 school calendar, which was presented to the Board of
Education Tuesday night.
The Tuesday, November 11 holiday has previously been a day off for students
and, recently, has been used as an in-service day for teachers, but school
officials, for the first time, plan on making it a full school day.
Superintendent of Schools John R. Reed explained that with school already off
the previous Tuesday, when voters head to the polls to cast their ballots for
either Bill Clinton or Bob Dole, and Thanksgiving later in the month, November
was in need of a five-day week. Thus, Veterans' Day was added to the schedule.
Some school board members were concerned that sending students to school that
day may step on some toes, especially those who hold dear the holiday to honor
American veterans. But both Dr Reed and Newtown teachers' union president Jack
Quinlan agree that students will better recognize Veteran's Day in school
where events would be planned to honor those who fought in war.
Dr Reed said if there was major opposition to having school on Veterans' Day
he would consider holding classes on Columbus Day, October 14.
February Vacation, once an entire week, has now dwindled to just a day,
February 17 (Presidents' Day). However, if there are more than five snow days
by the end of January, schools will be open that day.
This past February, students and teachers enjoyed a four day weekend, getting
both Friday and Monday off.
The final day of school is scheduled for June 11.
The school board will vote on next year's schedule Tuesday night.
