Slicing, Mixing, And Baking In Eighth Grade
Slicing, Mixing, And Baking
In Eighth Grade
By Sarah Hemingway
Peel, chop, slice, mix; that is what students in Mrs Bateyâs classes were doing on Friday, November 15. Eighth grade language arts students brought in the ingredients and supplies to make apple pies. Each language arts class was divided into six groups of three to four students. Each student in the group was responsible for bringing some ingredients and supplies to make the pies, and also for doing part of the work in making the pie.
Some students used a food processor to make the crust of the pie, while others in their group peeled or sliced the apples. This activity taught students about teamwork and responsibility. After all, you cannot make an apple pie if a member of the group forgets the apples! Students were also encouraged to work well with each other, which for some groups was the most challenging task of all.
Tuesday, November 21, after school several students from each class stayed to bake the pies in the Home Ec Room. On Wednesday students in Cluster 8A shared their homemade pies with teachers and administrators of Newtown Middle School. Students also read historical fiction pieces they wrote in preparation of Thanksgiving. All in all, this activity proved to be both fun and challenging at the same time.
Specials thank you to the Big Y for their generous donations. Happy Thanksgiving.
