Truck Driver Loses Steering Wheel Then The Road

BY ANDREW GOROSKO

A freak accident took place the afternoon of April 14 on Equestrian Ridge Road

in Poverty Hollow where new homes are under construction.

About 1:15 pm, truck driver Ronald Lewis of 401 Main Street, Monroe, was

driving a large, rusty 1965 Mack dump truck being used for home construction

work. The truck is owned by Metro Construction of Easton, police said.

As Lewis drove the truck down a grade, the steering wheel came off in his

hands, according to police.

The heavy vehicle went out of control and rolled off the road, going over a

stone wall and coming to rest in a small stream. Police characterized the

truck as being unfit for road travel.

A Newtown volunteer ambulance crew promptly responded to the accident scene,

as did police. Mr Lewis appeared shaken from the incident, but not seriously

injured.

A wrecker was used to tow the dump truck out of the area.

Charges filed against Mr Lewis included reckless driving, operating an

unregistered motor vehicle, and operating a class of vehicle for which he is

not licensed.

The charges amount to a misdemeanor summons, meaning that a court appearance

by Mr Lewis is required. He was scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court

April 22.
