McClure Likely GOP Candidate For School Board
BY STEVE BIGHAM
Longtime Newtown resident Elaine McClure was expected to receive the
nomination for a seat on the Board of Education at this week's Republican
caucus.
Mrs McClure, of 32 Ashford Lane, received the endorsement of the town
committee last week, defeating Joe Borst of Beechwood Drive, 22-11.
Mr Borst announced earlier this week that he would end his pursuit for a seat
on the school board, despite the fact that he was the selection committee's
recommended candidate. Mr Borst's fellow council member Karen Blawie nominated
Mrs McClure for the school board post.
"I've decided not to push it to the caucus," he said.
Nevertheless, Mr Borst said he would run again for the Legislative Council
where he has served for several years.
Mrs McClure, a former five-year member of the Legislative Council, recently
returned to Newtown after spending a couple of years in Geneva, Switzerland,
where she worked as director of an international school.
She believes she has ways to save the town money.
Mrs McClure is a former president of the PTA council and said she helped
revive a school system that needed to be united.
"I think I helped make it more effective. We managed to get everyone working
together, something that is needed now," she said.
If endorsed at the caucus, Mrs McClure would run for the seat of Isabelle
Murray, who recently stepped down after 12 years on the school board.
The Republican Town Committee also endorsed Robert Taylor and Pat Linnell as
candidates for two alternate vacancies on the Planning & Zoning Commission.
