NHS Football Team Romps Again

Newtown High School’s football team cruised to a 42-7 win at Notre Dame-Fairfield on Saturday afternoon, giving the Nighthawks six wins in as many games since a season-opening defeat. The Nighthawks remain perfect in South-West Conference play and will try to continue their winning ways at Stratford (3-4) this Saturday at 3 pm.

During Saturday’s blustery afternoon, the Hawks jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead behind the efforts of quarterback Jake DeVellis, receiver Kurt Nacewicz, the always strong offensive line, and defenders Mike Lago and Tim Wheeler.

DeVellis scored on a 20-yard run and hooked up with Nacewicz, who continues to pile up yardage after catches, for a 70-yard touchdown in the tone-setting first quarter. In the second, the Lancers were driving in Newtown territory with a chance to slice the lead in half, but Mike Lago picked off a pass and ran the ball back 71 yards for a 21-0 lead. Lago blocked a punt to help the Hawks build on a 14-0 lead en route to last week’s win over New Fairfield. DeVellis hooked up with Nacewicz for a 12-yard score and Wheeler recovered fumble and returned it 10 yards for the final TD of the half. DeVellis added 10-yard TD scamper in the third.

Newtown has outscored its last four opponents a combined 158-21, with most of the points being racked up in the first two quarters of the games.

Newtown is seventh in the Class LL playoff point rankings and will have a chance to earn plenty of points in their last three games — against Brookfield (currently 6-0 and first in Class M) at home on November 7, at Bethel (5-2 and eighth in Class M) on November 14, and versus Masuk (6-1 and first in Class L) on November 26. The SWC title game is slated for November 20. Newtown does not play 6-1 Bunnell (an SWC team that is third in Class L). The November 7 game against Brookfield, which is Homecoming Night, could be a crucial tilt in the SWC championship game and state playoff picture.
