In the inspection, 1,550 vehicles were scanned and 64 were stopped for a closer look. The checkpoint resulted in $694 in fines to offending motorists.

Newtown police officers Louis Ferreira and Chris Vadas participated in the checkpoint.

The inspection turned up 35 mechanical violations, three driver violations, and seven vehicle registration violations.

Inspectors issued 47 tickets. Some 35 vehicles were found to have defective equipment. Twenty seat belt violations were noted.
