Thanksgiving Vacation Workshops At Flanders

WOODBURY — There be three days of Thanksgiving vacation workshops at Flanders Nature Center & Land Trust this year, with programs on Monday, November 21, to Wednesday, November 23.

Those interested can register for one or all three of the days. A different topic will be offered each day. The fee per class is $10 per child for members and $12 for non-members. The workshops are geared for children ages 3 to 8, and each will run from 1 to 3 pm.

On Monday, children will explore a day in the life of a Native American child growing up in the time of the Pilgrims. How did they spend their time? What games did they play? What were their chores?

Participants will learn of another culture and have fun discovering it.

Tuesday’s program will focus on the mighty and versatile vegetable, the pumpkin. There will be pumpkin decorating, seed counting, and a game.

How is this vegetable harvested? How is it different from gourds we see at the supermarkets? What about corn? It’ll be all pumpkin, all day.

Wednesday is “turkey” day, when the class will learn about our favorite Thanksgiving bird.

There are reasons why they look the way they do… all those feathers, and that funny waddle on the neck.

Was turkey really served at the first Thanksgiving?

Children will be surprised to find the answers.

Each of the three days will consist of a craft, storytelling, hiking, learning something new, and doing something different and adventurous, all nature-related and all geared to a child’s level of learning.

Registration is required and classes are limited to ten students; call Flanders at 203-263-3711
