Trick Or Treating For The Benefit Of Others

Have you ever heard of giving eyeglasses or money to trick-or-treaters instead of candy on Halloween? Well do not be surprised if Newtown students come to the door asking for the two to help support two important causes – Sight Night and the American Red Cross Liberty Disaster Relief Fund.

Four Newtown Middle School students – Alex Hart, Brianna Eckhardt, Amy Rosental and Lisa Sapienza – as well as the Newtown High School Leo Club will be heading out on Halloween night to collect used eye glasses for Sight Night organized by Lens Crafters and Lions Club International. The used and recycled glasses will be distributed to countries like Bolivia, Tunisia, Mexico, and the Philippines where individuals cannot afford eye glasses.

Last year 10,000 volunteers collected 8,600 pairs of glasses for distribution during Sight Night.  Anyone wishing to donate glasses may do so at any Lens Crafters store or by calling the Hart family at 270-0369 or Carl Swanhall at 426-2016.

Newtown Middle School Youth Advisory Board members will be going around town asking people to donate money for the American Red Cross Liberty Relief Fund. The groups of students will have milk jugs with the American Red Cross information on them as well as Newtown Youth Services pins. For more information contact Youth Services at 270-4335.
