Wilfred D. Potter, Jr

Wilfred D. Potter, Jr, formerly of Newtown and area towns, died January 12 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

He was born in Groton, Mass., July 25, 1920, son of the late Wilfred D. Potter, Sr, and Florence (Frye) Potter.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Beatrice (Lewis) Potter; a daughter, Linda L. Glover and son-in-law, James T. Glover, of West Dover, Vt.; a son, Edward D. Potter of Los Angeles, Calif.; a granddaughter, Debra L. Glover, of Bethel; a grandson, James P. Glover of Bethel; a sister, Elizabeth Stewart of Bradenton, Fla.; and cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Mr Potter graduated from Newton High School, in Newton, Mass., and attended Babson Institute in Wellesley. He played semi-pro hockey for the team called “Olympics” in the Boston Gardens. An avid sailor, he taught sailing for many summers in West Falmouth on the Cape. A veteran of the US Army during World War II, he earned a Purple Heart at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a past president of the Newtown Rotary Club, of which he was a member for 38 years, and member of the Newtown Congregational Church, where he had served as a deacon.

Employed with General Motors Sales Promotion for Connecticut for 15 years, he went on to be a partner of Fair Auto Supply of Danbury for many years.

The last three years he lived in Vermont near his daughter and son-in-law, losing his eyesight to macular degeneration two years ago.

A family service was held in Vermont on January 14, with a memorial service to be held in Newtown in the spring.
