With a second-place finish in Boston, Massachusetts, on February 11th and a sixth-place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Power Regional in Trenton, New Jersey, on February 25 the Newtown High School Winter Guard has qualified for the Winter Guard International competition in Dayton, Ohio, on April 8.

Currently, the guard ranks eighth in the nation out of 142 units.

During the winter, the Newtown Guard competes against area high schools in their class – the scholastic A MAC (Musical Arts Conference) competition – and currently it is in first place. Performing to the music “Stealth,” the Guard combines theatre and dance with the cornerstone of equipment such as rifles, sabers, and flags spinning and flying through the air.

The Newtown team has just 16 members.

Most recently, the Guard took first in the South West Conference competition held March 10 at Bunnell High School in Stratford.

Winter Guard International (WGI) is an organization promoting “Sport of the Arts.” Guard members perform a choreographed routine using flags, sabers and rifles and they are judged on use of equipment, movement, ensemble analysis and general effect.
